Rheological constitutive equation for a model of soft glassy materials

چکیده
We solve exactly and describe in detail a simplified scalar model for the low frequency shear rheology of foams, emulsions, slurries, etc. @P. Sollich, F. Lequeux, P. Hébraud, and M. E. Cates, Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 2020 ~1997!#. The model attributes similarities in the rheology of such ‘‘soft glassy materials’’ to the shared features of structural disorder and metastability. By focusing on the dynamics of mesoscopic elements, it retains a generic character. Interactions are represented by a mean-field noise temperature x , with a glass transition occurring at x51 ~in appropriate units!. The exact solution of the model takes the form of a constitutive equation relating stress to strain history, from which all rheological properties can be derived. For the linear response, we find that both the storage modulus G8 and the loss modulus G9 vary with frequency as v for 1,x,2, becoming flat near the glass transition. In the glass phase, aging of the moduli is predicted. The steady shear flow curves show power-law fluid behavior for x,2, with a nonzero yield stress in the glass phase; the Cox-Merz rule does not hold in this non-Newtonian regime. Single and double step strains further probe the nonlinear behavior of the model, which is not well represented by the Bernstein-Kearseley-Zapas relation. Finally, we consider measurements of G8 and G9 at finite strain amplitude g . Near the glass transition, G9 exhibits a maximum as g is increased in a strain sweep. Its value can be strongly overestimated due to nonlinear effects, which can be present even when the stress response is very nearly harmonic. The largest strain gc at which measurements still probe the linear response is predicted to be roughly frequency independent. @S1063-651X~98!04407-9#

Yielding and flow in adhesive and nonadhesive concentrated emulsions.
The nonlinear rheological response of soft glassy materials is addressed experimentally by focusing on concentrated emulsions where interdroplet attraction is tuned through varying the surfactant content. متن کاملRheological hysteresis in soft glassy materials.
The nonlinear rheology of a soft glassy material is captured by its constitutive relation, shear stress versus shear rate, which is most generally obtained by sweeping up or down the shear rate over a finite temporal window. For a huge amount of complex fluids, the up and down sweeps do not superimpose and define a rheological hysteresis loop. By means of extensive rheometry coupled to time-res...

متن کاملOn the cytoskeleton and soft glassy rheology.
The cytoskeleton is a complex structure within the cellular corpus that is responsible for the main structural properties and motilities of cells. A wide range of models have been utilized to understand cytoskeletal rheology and mechanics (see e.g. [Mofrad, M., Kamm, R., 2006. Cytoskeletal Mechanics: Models and Measurements. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge]). From this large collection of...
متن کاملDigested Sludge Rheology: Similarities with Soft Glassy Materials
Despite the obvious advantages of anaerobic sludge digestion viz. sludge reduction and sustainable management, it has some drawbacks. In particular, anaerobic digestion produces a complex and unknown residue sludge which is difficult to treat and to dewater. Because dewatering mainly involves rheological solid characteristics, this paper focuses on the similarities between these residues with o...
